IT decommissioning and site clearance across New Zealand

We work alongside your site engineers to decommission and clear IT environments, from rack removal to asset disposal, following your technical protocols.

Or call 0800 4 EXTECH.

What we decommission

From a single rack to a full site, working to your protocols. What happens to the data and the hardware afterwards is covered in data destruction and IT asset disposal.

Server racks being removed from a data room

Data rooms and racks

Heavy infrastructure teardown

Safe, technical removal of racks and enterprise hardware from sensitive server environments.

  • Server rack removalProfessional unbolting, cable loom cutting and physical removal of floor-standing racks.
  • Enterprise hardwareDismantling of mainframes, blade clusters and specialised industrial compute units.
  • Network and powerSwitches, routers, firewalls and UPS systems removed along with the racks.

Site clearance and logistics

Bulk removal and heavy-lift transport, through to a clean-shell finish.

  • Office IT clear-outsBulk removal of workstation fleets, monitors and peripherals for permanent disposal.
  • Equipment logisticsHeavy-lift transport and removal of large hardware from high-rise or secure facilities.
  • Full site clearanceEnd-of-lease technical stripping to return spaces to a clean-shell state.
  • RecoveryAll assets go to our facility for data destruction, reuse assessment and recycling.

Teardown methodology

Every project follows the same four steps, starting with an audit of your site so the plan fits it.

  1. Site audit

On-site assessment of rack density, cabling complexity and access logistics, so the removal plan fits your site.

  2. Dismantling

Technical staff take the infrastructure apart safely, working to your protocols and alongside your site engineers.

  3. Extraction

Heavy-duty removal of all assets from the premises, using the right equipment to protect the site interior.

  4. Recovery

Equipment goes to our facility with custody recorded, then data is destroyed and the hardware is reused or recycled.

Who does what

A decommissioning goes smoothly when everyone knows their part. This is the typical split, and we confirm it for your site in the plan.

Typical split of responsibilities between your team and EXTECH
Phase Your team EXTECH
Planning Sets the scope, access and timing, and shares your protocols and site rules. Runs the site audit of rack density, cabling and access, then agrees a removal plan.
Systems and data Backs up and migrates, powers down, and releases devices from management and monitoring. Works to your technical protocols, alongside your site engineers.
Physical removal Provides access, building approvals and escorts where needed. Unbolts, cuts cable looms and removes racks and hardware.
Transport Books lifts, loading docks and parking. Heavy-lift transport and removal, with custody recorded to our facility.
Data destruction and recycling Chooses erasure or shredding for each device type. Erases or shreds the media, then assesses for reuse and recycles the rest.
Records Files the records with your asset register. Supplies the manifest with time-stamped photos, the asset audit and certificates of destruction.

Your site may differ. Tell us how your environment is run and we will adjust the split.

What to send us for a quote

The more we know, the sooner we can plan. Eight things help most. Photos of the room, the racks and the access route help more than words.

  • ScopeThe number and type of racks, plus any mainframes, blade clusters or specialised units.
  • LocationThe site address, the floor or level, and whether it is a high-rise or secure facility.
  • AccessLifts, loading dock, parking, and the hours the site can be accessed.
  • CablingHow much cabling needs cutting and removing, and how complex it is.
  • State of the systemsWhether equipment is powered down, and what is still live.
  • Data requirementsYour required method for each device type, erasure or shredding, and any sector rules.
  • Building rulesInductions, escorts, insurance or approvals the building requires.
  • TimingTarget dates, lease end dates and any hard deadlines.

Decommissioning: your questions

Straight answers on how a project runs. Not covered here? Ask us.

Do you work with our own engineers?

Yes. We work alongside your site engineers and follow your technical protocols, so the people who know the environment stay in control of it.

Can you remove equipment from a high-rise or secure site?

Equipment logistics covers heavy-lift transport and removal from high-rise and secure facilities. The site audit confirms access, lifts and the equipment needed, so tell us about any building rules early.

Do you do end-of-lease clearance?

Yes. Full site clearance means end-of-lease technical stripping, returning the space to a clean-shell state.

What happens to the data on the equipment?

Every storage device is erased with certified software or physically shredded, and you receive records. See the Data Destruction page for how the two methods compare.

What records do we receive?

A manifest with time-stamped photos of what left the site, an asset audit log, erasure certificates for each erased device, and serialised certificates of destruction for shredded media. Existing clients can also see their records in the client portal.

How long does a project take?

It depends on the number of racks, the cabling, the access and your timing. The site audit sets a realistic plan, so send us the details and your deadlines.

Can you work outside normal hours?

Tell us the access windows your site allows, and we will confirm what is possible in the removal plan.

What does decommissioning cost?

It depends on the scope, the access and the logistics. Send us the details listed above, with photos if you can, and we will come back with a quote.
