IT asset disposition, also called IT asset disposal or ITAD, is the secure, documented process of retiring end-of-life IT equipment.
ITAD is not the same as e-waste recycling. Recycling deals with materials. ITAD also deals with your data, your records and the value left in the equipment, which is why organisations with customer data, audits or compliance duties use ITAD.
Retiring IT equipment is a security, compliance and environmental decision, not just a clear-out.
Retired laptops, servers and phones still hold customer records, staff details and business information. Deleting files, reformatting or a factory reset can leave data recoverable. Certified erasure or shredding does not.
Under the Privacy Act 2020, organisations must report serious privacy breaches, and using a supplier does not pass that responsibility on. ITAD gives you the paperwork to show your data was destroyed.

Working equipment is erased with YouWipe software so it can be reused. Media that has failed, or must be destroyed, is shredded to 20mm fragments.
You receive your records, and certificates of destruction are available. Reusable equipment is assessed for resale, and the rest is dismantled and recycled responsibly.
Data destruction is the heart of ITAD. EXTECH uses two methods and matches each one to the risk.
Best for working laptops, desktops and servers you plan to reuse or resell. YouWipe overwrites the data so the hardware keeps its value, and each erased device is documented.
Erasure certificates are available for each device.
Best for media that has failed, cannot be reliably erased, or must be physically destroyed. Industrial cross-cut shredding reduces hard drives, SSDs and smartphones to 20mm fragments.

The Privacy Act 2020 requires New Zealand organisations to notify the Privacy Commissioner and affected people about a privacy breach that is likely to cause serious harm.
